Tribal Business League Holds Shark Tank in Green Bay Wisconsin

Wisconsin Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association

Green Bay Wis -- On April 16th, 2019 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store Association holds their annual trade show.

Here, you will find hundreds of vendors displaying their goods and services. Sales professionals stroll the floors looking to speak with eager buyers. Thousands of buyers come in bunches, badges with titles of "Retail Manager", "Director of Corporate Operations", "General Manager," and the like.

The buyers come from all corners of the state of Wisconsin, in search of new solutions to improve their retail operations.

There to offer those new solutions are vendors providing food service options, whether they're quick grab-n-go, healthy options, or deli style options for those with a higher demand for a more detailed food service station.

Other considerations include petroleum wholesalers, sharing their latest and greatest in fuel pump technology, some including the EMV (chip and pin) inserts, some with NFC (near field communication) and others with programming on the video screens while consumers pump their fuel.

Let's not forget the in-store vendors providing options for snacks, soda, automotive, tobacco, cigarette, and light grocery. Other vendors include payment processing providers, point-of-sale equipment manufacturers and wholesalers.

If you're not sure if you're properly insured, you'll find vendors offering convenience store specific insurance, risk assessment and analysis, among other tertiary services necessary to properly run a high functioning convenience store.

Tribal Business League Holds Shark Tank

Just one convention center room away, sits 15 founding members of the Tribal Business League. These founding members are also tribal members of the following tribes; Lac Courte Oreilles, Bad River, St. Croix, Red Cliff, and Lac du Flambeau.

Patiently waiting out in the lobby are 16 vendors looking to do business with Native American tribes, specifically, the tribes of the Tribal Business League.

Throughout the day, CEOs, VPs of Sales, Business Development Directors, and other executive level individuals presented their company, their capacity, and ultimately their capabilities to provide exceptional services to the service area of the tribe in the Tribal Business League.

Some of the specifics sought from the vendors included:

  • Top Benefits Provided

  • Fulfillment Capabilities

  • Delivery Schedule

  • Billing Terms

  • Biggest Market Differentiation

  • Expansion Plans

  • Exclusive Product Lines

  • Private Label Capacity

  • and much more

Some of the vendors are more capable than others, and some are more flexible than others. Some of the vendors have been servicing tribes for years, and in some cases, decades.

The Goals and Objectives with the Shark Tank

The primary goal of utilizing a Shark Tank was to ensure that each and every single vendor came to the table with a presentation and value proposition that would be deemed beneficial to the tribal communities involved.

Secondary benefits included ensuring that all tribes, regardless of size, economic profile, buying capacity and experience in vendor relations were treated equally. Equal treatment includes same pricing for all tribal communities regardless of annual revenue, economic profile, and buying capacity, equal delivery schedules, access to exclusive products, private label options, and training.

The third benefit was to show vendors that we mean business. We are unified, and we are the first ever tribally-led, non-profit buying club in the United States. This has been our more prominently displayed benefit, as vendors that were taking advantage of smaller tribes for decades are no longer able to do that, and much work much harder to earn the business of the group.

Next Steps for the Tribal Business League

The next steps include conducting a SWOT Analysis of the vendors whom presented to the group, and determine which vendor will be the best partner offering the best package.

In May 2019, the Tribal Business League will undergo a planning session with all member representatives and conduct a SWOT Analysis.

The SWOT Analysis will help determine which vendor provides the best possible partnership opportunity for 2019 and beyond.
